Create audiences of clients and leads

Build a fixed list or a rule-based list of contacts, see who can be emailed, and import or export members.

An audience is a group of clients and leads that a campaign can be sent to. Open Marketing > Audiences.

Two kinds of audience

KindHow it works
Static list (manually curated)You choose each member
Dynamic segment (saved filter, live)Members are found by rules and refreshed each time you look

Create an audience

  1. Select New Audience.
  2. Enter a Name, choose the Kind, and add an optional Description.
  3. Select Create.
  4. Select the audience's name to open and set it up.

Static list: add members

  1. In Add Members, choose Client or Lead.
  2. Type a name or email to search.
  3. Select Add next to the person.

Remove a member with the bin icon in the membership table.

Dynamic segment: set the rules

In Filter Criteria choose any of these, then select Save:

  • Include Clients and Include Leads.
  • Party role (Clients only): Customer, Supplier or Both.
  • Lead status (Leads only): NEW, CONTACTED, QUALIFIED or UNQUALIFIED.
  • Country code (Clients only), such as US.
  • Updated within (days).
  • Tags, comma-separated. A contact matches if it has any of them.
  • Active clients only.

Under Manual Overrides you can add a contact who must be included whatever the rules say. To exclude a contact the rules found, remove them from the membership list.

Read the membership

Computed Membership shows the totals: how many members, how many are marketable and how many are suppressed. Each row shows the contact, type, email, Consent and whether they are marketable. Only marketable contacts can receive a campaign. See Consent, suppression and unsubscribing.

Import and export members

  • Export downloads CSV or Excel of the membership.
  • Import CSV: download the template, which has two columns, Entity Type (client or lead) and Entity Id. Choose the file, Preview, then Commit Import.

Delete an audience

Select the bin icon in the list and confirm. The audience's membership data is removed.

Good to know

  • A campaign reads an audience's membership when it runs, not when you create the campaign.
  • Contacts with no email address are left out of campaign sends.
