Admit a patient
Find or register the patient, choose a bed and doctor, and open the admission list.
Before you start
You need the Hospital Edit permission and at least one free bed (see Set up wards and beds). Open Hospital > Admissions (open it). From the ward board you can also click a free bed and choose Admit a patient to this bed.
Admit a patient
- Click Admit a patient.
- Under 1. Patient, type the patient's name, phone or patient number and click Find. Click Choose next to the right person.
- If the person is not found, click Register a new patient. Enter the Name (required) and, if known, Phone, Date of birth, Gender and Allergies, then click Register patient. An emergency arrival can be registered on the spot.
- Under 2. Bed and doctor, choose the Ward. The list shows how many beds are free in each ward.
- Choose a Bed, or keep First free bed.
- Choose the Doctor, or leave Not assigned. Only doctors assigned to this hospital branch are listed.
- Set the Type to Planned or Emergency, and optionally fill in Expected days, Reason for admission and Diagnosis on admission.
- Click Admit patient.
A message confirms the admission, for example "Asha Rao admitted to General Ward, bed 3 (A-00012)", with a link to Open the chart. The admission number (A-00001 and so on) is given automatically.
What the system refuses
- A patient who is already in the hospital cannot be admitted again; the message names the existing admission.
- A bed can hold one patient only. If two people try to take the last bed at the same moment, the second one is told the bed is taken.
- A bed that is dirty, being cleaned, in maintenance or blocked cannot take a patient.
- A closed ward, or a deactivated patient, cannot be admitted to.
The admissions list
The list below the form shows each stay with its number, patient (with any allergy), ward and bed, doctor, admission time, status and Bill so far. Use the buttons In the hospital, Discharged and Everything to filter, and the Search box for a name, phone or number. Click Open chart to see the full chart.
A discharged stay that has not been billed yet shows "Not billed" under its status.
Good to know
- Allergies are shown on the board, the list and the chart, so staff see them before treating.
- An admission that was a mistake can be cancelled from its chart while nothing has been recorded under it. See Move, discharge or cancel.
