Move, discharge or cancel an admission
Change a patient's bed, discharge them with a summary, or cancel an admission made by mistake.
Before you start
These actions are on the patient's chart (Hospital > Admissions > Open chart) and need the Hospital Edit permission. They are offered only while the patient is admitted.
Move a patient to another bed
- On the chart, click Move to another bed.
- In Move to a free bed, choose a bed. Each option shows the ward, the bed number and that ward's daily rate.
- Click Move.
The old bed becomes Dirty and goes to housekeeping (see the ward board). The new bed becomes Occupied. The bill starts counting nights at the new ward's current daily rate; nights already spent stay at the old bed's rate.
Discharge a patient
- On the chart, click Discharge.
- In How the patient leaves, choose Recovered, Improved, Referred to another hospital, Left against medical advice, or Deceased.
- Write the Final diagnosis. This is required.
- Optionally fill in Treatment given, Condition at discharge, Follow-up on and Advice and medicines to take home.
- Click Discharge patient.
On discharge the stay is closed, the bed goes to housekeeping, all active medicine orders are stopped, and the chart becomes read-only. The page then takes you to the Bill section so the bill can be settled (Charge the bill).
A discharged chart shows a Discharge summary with the hospital name, admission number, patient, doctor, diagnoses, how the patient left, treatment, advice and follow-up date. Click Print discharge summary to print only that summary.
Cancel an admission
If you admitted someone by mistake, click Cancel admission. This works only while nothing has been recorded under the admission: no notes, no doses given and no charges. The bed is freed and active orders stop. If care has already been recorded, the system tells you to discharge the patient instead.
Good to know
- If a colleague changed the same admission at the same time, you are asked to reload before trying again.
- A discharged or cancelled admission cannot be reopened.
- The daily bed rate is fixed per stay at the time the patient enters a bed, so later rate changes in Wards & Beds do not alter a running stay.
