Use the ward board and housekeeping
See every bed and patient at a glance, and keep beds clean and ready.
The ward board
Open Hospital > Ward Board (open it). The top shows four figures:
- Inpatients - patients in the hospital now, with how many were admitted and discharged today.
- Occupancy - occupied beds as a percentage of beds in service.
- Free beds - beds ready for a patient, and how many are being made ready.
- Out of service - beds in maintenance or blocked.
Below that, each ward is a card of bed tiles. A tile shows the bed number, its state and, if occupied, the patient's name, the number of days and an "emergency" tag when the admission was an emergency.
Bed states
| State | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Free | Ready for a patient |
| Occupied | A patient is in the bed |
| Dirty | The patient has left; the bed waits for cleaning |
| Being cleaned | Housekeeping is working on it |
| Maintenance | Out of service for repair |
| Blocked | Out of service for another reason |
A bed becomes Occupied only when a patient is admitted or moved into it. It becomes Dirty by itself when the patient is discharged or moved to another bed.
Work with one bed
Click a tile to open its panel.
- For an occupied bed, Open chart takes you to the patient's chart. The panel also shows any allergies.
- For a free bed, Admit a patient to this bed starts an admission with that bed chosen.
- With the Hospital Edit permission, a bed that is not occupied offers buttons such as Mark dirty, Start cleaning, Make ready, Needs maintenance and Block. A bed in maintenance or blocked offers Back in service. You can type a Reason (for example "Broken bed rail") first; it is saved in the audit log.
A bed with a patient cannot be changed from the board.
Housekeeping
Open Hospital > Housekeeping (open it). Two lists show the beds that need work: Dirty and Being cleaned. With the Hospital Edit permission, click Start cleaning on a dirty bed, then Make ready when it is done. The bed turns Free and can take the next patient. When nothing needs work, the page says "Every bed is clean and ready."
Good to know
- If someone else changed a bed at the same moment, the change is refused with a message asking you to reload.
- Beds you removed in Wards & Beds no longer show on the board.
- If there are no wards yet, the board asks you to add wards and beds first.
