Set up wards and beds
Create wards with a daily bed rate, change the number of beds, and close a ward.
Before you start
Open Hospital > Wards & Beds (open it). Anyone with Hospital View can read this page. Adding or changing wards needs the Hospital Create permission.
A ward is a group of beds that share a type and a daily rate. The ward types are General, Semi-private, Private, ICU, HDU, Maternity, Paediatric and Emergency.
Add a ward
- In the Add ward row, type the Ward name, for example "General Ward".
- Choose the Type.
- Enter the Daily rate. This is what one night in any bed of the ward costs on the bill. Leave it empty for 0.
- Enter the number of Beds (0 to 100).
- Click Add ward.
The beds are numbered 1, 2, 3 and so on. You get a confirmation such as "Added General Ward with 10 beds." Ward names must be different within a hospital.
Change a ward
In the table, edit the Daily rate or Beds of a ward and click Save.
- To add beds, raise the number. Bed numbers continue from the lowest free number.
- To remove beds, lower the number. Only beds without a patient are removed, starting from the highest numbers. If there are not enough empty beds, the change is refused and tells you to move patients out first.
Close or reopen a ward
Click Close on a ward you no longer use. A ward that still has patients cannot be closed; move or discharge them first. A closed ward shows "Closed" in the list, cannot take new patients, and can be brought back with Reopen.
Good to know
- The In use column shows how many beds in the ward currently hold a patient.
- Beds that are not free (being cleaned, in maintenance or blocked) are mentioned under the table; manage them on the ward board.
- Bed days are billed at the ward's daily rate, one charge per night. See Charge the bill.
